dear friends and and members.

i have just been informed that mike passed away on friday 27th July at 5 o'clock. mike had been fighting with an illness for some time and seemed to be doing well in that department, being unaware the illness quietly turned extremely aggressive and affected a number of vital body organs.

many of us have known Mike for some time and some for an extremely long time perhaps even sailed with him. i had the great honour and pleasure of meeting Mike and spending some time with him and his wife this year, believe me if you have never met Mike it is a loss of an experience. mike was a well educated and intelligent man but never boasted of his cleverness and practical dexterity.

Mike was a gentleman by all degrees, if you had the opportunity ever to speak with Mike you would find that he would be exactly the same if you were to meet him.

A fine man, a great bloke and a good friend.
rest in peace over the bar

Tom

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
To full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness or farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
Tennyson

We knew he was quite ill, knew the ship was sailing out, but I'm always sad to see a good man leave this earth. The angels will be joyful to have such a soul with them.

Beautiful farewell poem Tom, I cried though... glad you had the pleasure to have met him.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I Just heard about the sad end of one our number, Tom informed me of the death of Mike (Sparks) Newell. I never met Mike but I found him to be very kind and supportive when I was in the doldrums. He was a wise and witty poster and will be sorely missed;I'm glad to have known him for the while aboard here and hope that he now at peace in the beyond.

So sad to hear the news that Mike has made his final voyage. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him or chatted to him via Skype or thru this site. Rest easy Mate your final voyage is over.

Fiddlers Green is a place I've heard tell',
Where sailor folk go if they don't go to Hell.
Where mermaids do swim and the dolphins do play,
And the cold seas of Greenland are far far away.

Tie me up in my oilskins and jumper,
No more to the dockside I'll roam.
Just tell my old shipmates
I've taken a trip mates,
And I'll meet them some day on Fiddlers Green.

I heard the news earlier, but simply couldnt bring myself to come here. Tearful and saddened by the loss. He was a good man, full of wisdom and kindness. He also had a way with words that made ya scratch yer head. laugh out loud and want to smile. Thank you for what you added to my life. I hope I was able to add to yours while you were here. You are missed.

Heartfelt thanks to all those wonderful friends of Mike for the wonderful flowers in the shape of a flag. They lay alongside his coffin during the service, then the choir gathered around it to sing the anthem "The Lord bless you and keep you" Everyone was very moved and the scent from the red roses and carnations. It was so lovely.

I'm sure Mike would have been overwhelmed with everyone's kindness and lovely comments on the site.

Love to you all

Tricia, Ross and family
