Was not far of the mark there Geoff. Right company, right port, just that I was on the Port Macquarie not the Fairy though. Think that they had a hard time crewing that one up with a name like that. Was that one of your rello's on the wheel Geoff as he seemed a bit suss the way he mouthed the order from the pilot. Do recall that we where tied up behind her (where else would one tie up with that ship) in KGV just as she was about to depart on her final voyage. Never did get around to fo'castle head accommodation except on the RFA Warden.

I only had fo'castle berth once on the Capetown Castle, i think it was 6/8 to a cabin, Got turfed out of my bunk a few times landing on the deck in a pile with the others, when she would hit a milestone as she buried her head into a large swell and shudder to a sudden halt.

All the reporters sounded like that Tom, If you didnt talk proper you didna geta job in the media.
The pilot boat Capt Cook is a fine looking boat, i can see why they didnt go along side the ship though, They were afraid of sticking a hole in the side of the ships with that bowsprit sticking out of her bows

Think you are right about him looking like a postie mate. Has really got that faraway look about him. Not one of our mob to bloody smart with a proper jumper on and not a rag bag shirt and just come of chipping detail. Did the pilot into Melbourne so I was told because I can not to this day recall ever doing it as I was that hissed at the time. As you know not many liked doing that pilotage because of that bloody great big rip that is at the entrance. Was told that everyone kept down wind of me from the fumes exuding from the gob.
