Hi there Bob.
Ill call you Bob if thats all right?Sorry that I missed you at the Vindi.
Cant remember a thing, names, faces, happenings nothing except
how cold it was,but it wasnt to bad at night as I started seeing
the daughter of the Berkley Arms,so had somewhere to hide
from the cold evenings.I realy enjoyed my only trip on the
Ajana.Did you know that she was lost somewhere of the South
American coast.I have a couple of photo's of her if you would
like copies please let me know.

Hi Tony.
The first of your ships, the "Empire Hallidale",dont rembember that name,
was she a "trooper" like the Empire Orwell was.The "Orwell" did six trips
on her.Not a new ship(ex German),but one of the happiest ships I was
on,had great times on a great run calling in all the "Military"postings :-
Gib,Aden,Colombo,Singapore,Hong Kong,Pusan and Kure in Japan,and
and the same on the way back.Good old days.Nice to hear from you,
if you get the chance, please stay in touch.

Yeah Dave she was trooping, I saw some of the troops in fact they rained pennies on me when I stood on the wharf after missing her, it has been a big regret in my life that I didn't stop to pick up the coins, I was too embarrassed and just slinked away to hide. :D

Hi Bob.
Nice to hear from you,I never sailed or docked in Liverpool,
the closest I got was on the Shell tanker,"Latirus".We left
Swansea to go wherever, sailed up and down the Irish coast
for about ten days, then for some unknown reason put into
Ellmsmere Port.By now we were all pretty cheesed off,so paid
off, with just enough wages left for a single ticket back to Swansea.
The Ajana was my last ship before coming ashore to get married I was
second steward, and was offered Chief Steward job, if I signed a Company
Contract,but being in love,I stayed ashore(bloody silly me).I think
that the Ajana was one of the best ships I sailed on.I know that she
sank somewhere off the South American coast after catching fire,or so
I have been told.I dont spend much time on this site, most of the time I
an on Merchant Navy Old Friends.

HI tom.
How did you guess, the Empire Orwell was the happiest
ship I sailed on,not the best ship, but definately the happiest.
Started off in the Crew Mess then went to the Leading Hands
Mess, then to the Officers Mess ending up as 1st Mess Room
Steward, but the best job out of the three was the Leading
Hands Mess.I did six trips on her in all. Before going to the
breakers yard, she ended up as a pilgrims ship running to the
Middle East,I did know her new name but cant remember at the
moment,but I have it somewhere.

Custom: That is the way the mop flops
It is surprising that a lot of us can remember having the best trips on the chattiest ships. I think that is why the saying "Chatty but happy" came from. I know the worst trip that I done was on one of the newest ships the company had and in fact was the last trip that I did at sea. I broke my rule of not ever going on a new ship but in a way I would not be where I am now if I had followed that rule. In a way I am also glad that I got out before the change of crewing ships happened as I would have ended up a bitter man.
