How smart/ bright are we.
NO calculators or abacus allowed, just brain power.
Quill pen and ink are not mandatory, you can use a pencil or Biro.
This is a copy of an arithmetic question of a 12yr old school boy in 1845.
See if you can solve the question with full workings shown.

79 lb @ 9½d =750½d = £3..2s..6½d plus ¾lb @ 7⅛d ,Ans = £3..3s..1⅝d Then again arithmetic was never my strong point. :baby: Me old fella could have done this in his head bless him.

Even my sums are wrong!
On rereading the book , I have his age wrong.
This is another copy of the work book, it belonged to my Great , great grandfather he was born in 1835 in Dawlish. As you can see by the date at the bottom of the page is 1845 . This would only make him 10 years old.

We think he was home schooled and never found out who Mr Payne is possiblly one of his class mates as there are bills made out to other people in his book.

Using the standard 5280 feet to 1 mile, I make it 792.000 feet eggsackly me dear. A barleycorn is a third of an inch apparently.

I get it now .doh! 792,000 X 12 = 9,504,000inches, or 28,512,000 barleycorns. Bloody ell, me pen's run out .
