I was sent this photo this morning.
Attachment:
Alec joyce.jpg

Not much info on him as yet, his name was Alec Joyce born in Plymouth and served in the merchant navy on deck, during the second world war .
He was a neat old guy that lived 4ks away in Matata and i used to have some good chats with him before he died a few years ago. I know he was only 14 years old when he joined up and went through the war. Sadly he was attacked in his own home and badly beaten up by some low life and he died not long after through his injuries. Unfortunately the low life got away with it for lack of evidence. (well not really but i wont go into that).
His daughter sent me this pic of him so i assume its taken at sea training school, she is going to forward all the info she has on him IE discharge book number etc

Ok Tomarse, as far as i can remember of him talking about his sea time he was always in the merch, Could be his hat band will say something like his sea school, then again it could be he was a naughty boy and sent there (where ever there is) by the judge.. Ive asked her for as much info as she has on him. :thumbsupp:

Managed to get some info, Cap band RCNS stands for Russel Cotes nautical school,Dorset run by Dr Barnardo.s.
His DOB is 23/4/24 in Poole Dorset.
The photo was taken i believe in 1939. which makes him 15 years old.
Ive emailed the college now called Parkstone STS

I haven't heard from Alec,s daughter in a while . just found out she has recently lost her husband.
So ive been fumbling around in the dark for a while
He was born 23rd May 1924 in Poole Dorset (Bournemouth), For what ever reason his mother couldnt look after him and he ended up in Dr Barnardo.s Ive contacted the school and they have no records of old boys.
His daughter gave his name as Alec Douglas William Joyce, National Archives say it is Alec Douglas CHARLES Joyce. :scratchhead:
His Discharge book is R 201880.
He has a medal card of which i dont have access it the full card.

It appears he has Atlantic star and the Pacific star and i cant work out the rest.
