1914: Ships collide, killing more than 1,000
More than 1,000 people died when the Pacific Liner RMS Empress of Ireland sunk in the St. Lawrence River today. The Norwegian coal freighter Storstad collided with the ocean liner in a dense fog around 2 AM.
"When the nose of the heavily laden Storstad sheared through the side of the big liner, many of the first cabin passengers were killed in their berths. Many others were so imprisoned by the smashed timbers that they could not reach the decks, and as the liner listed and sank in ten minutes, hundreds of these went down with her," reported the Lincoln Daily News on May 29, 1914.
The ocean liner rapidly took in water after turning on its side, causing it to sink before many could be rescued. Only around 473 survived the sinking.
