Hi Reg, Sorry it has taken me so long to see this message, have only just logged in and seen this message (i was getting a little frustrated at the brick walls i was hitting). Would you by any chance be Taffy 2 on the Sailorshome.org website? i googled John Anderson and Martha Discombe yesterday and came across a post which i believe might be yours which spurred me to log back in. Have you managed to find any information on John Anderson since sending this message? So far my searches have been fruitless. Kate

REG

Hi TYaffy.
Have you ever seen this..
O/N 186895 gross 10,949 tons; deadweight 15,970 tons; length 157m, beam 21m, BHP 4400
After a lengthy break, which included Christmas at home Wally returned to the sea for one voyage on the Iron Ore (homeport Newcastle):
Joining December 31st 1968 at Birkenhead, leaving March 25th 1969 at Middlesborough. The MV Iron Ore was frequently used between Canada & the United Kingdom.

Completed as an ore carrier during October 1959 by Austin & Pickersgill, Southwick for Common Brothers Line. This was one of five ore carriers ordered with 'Iron' names which were chartered to Bisco for ten years.

It was renamed Siroco during 1969 and sent to Aliaga during May 1986 for breaking up.

SORRY TAFFY NO PHOTO

A view of the MV Iron Ore produced for publicity material commemorating the completion of the vessel.

It is perhaps interesting to note there is an unusual job connection between Wally and his son, Mal in that as Wally sailed on the MV Iron Ore which brought iron ore from Canada to United Kingdom ports, including Birkenhead, so Mal, operating out of British Railways Birkenhead depot frequently took the iron ore on its next step from Bidston Dock to Shotton for use there.

I wonder if this was the vessel you were on??
Reg

I havent seen that piece before Sir Reg. Where did it come from???
Attachment:
1 mv iron ore.jpg

A pic of the MV Iron Ore. i did 3 months on her in 66. down to Vitoria, back up to Brake then down to Port Etienne and home. She was my best ship i sailed on, good grub and good crew mates.
She had a nasty habit of her engines breaking down and the not under command lights and signals were always rigged ready for use, only breakdowns over 1 hr were recorded
Jeff Sullivan was a school mate of mine and we went though all our schooling together and ive always had a bit of guilt about his death as i was the one he asked about going to sea.
I think he died on the trip before me, which would be mid 1966. He was buried at sea on their way to Canada, he died of a ruptured appendix.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR just been told that because he died abroad
It will cost 65 quid to get a copy. Thats way find my past only have him listed as 1966. ive have been trawling through the local Cardiff papers
South wales echo and the western Mail but cant find anything, i know there should be something as i can remember reading it in one of them.
To narrow the dates down a bit, im sure he was on the Iron Ore the trip before me. i joined her on 23 Aug 66,if you take in the seamans strike which lasted 2 or 3 months
and i paid off the Hornby Grange on 30th June 66 at the end of the strike. so that should narrow it down to 2 months of July and Aug 1966
I hope this helps us and i very much appreciate the work you are doing in this . I will have to buy you a nice bottle of plonk if we ever meet. CheersW.gif

Hi Taffy
Is this you?? Could it be our Famous Taffy2?
An old sea sailor was sitting on a bench near the wharf in new zealand when a young man walked up and sat down. The young man had spiked hair and each spike was a different color.... green, red, orange, blue, and yellow.
After a while the young man noticed that the sailor was staring at him.
"What's the matter old timer, never done anything wild in your life?
The old sailor replied, "Got drunk once and married a parrot. I was just wondering if you were my son!"
