Hi Taffy.
If you are interested I would only be too willing to have a look for your "Gt, gt, gt, grandfather". You can send me a PM .
Reg

Thanks Reg. Ill compose an email for you. Basically its that John Anderson again. 1841 census, 5 Manor row, Dawlish. lists place of birth British subject, born Portugal and i estimate his DOB about 1800( going by his ages on other census .DOD 11-4-1884 Dawlish.
I thought i would cast the net out further and see if i could find him or family in the surrounding parishes. Cant pin him down in Portugal. :thumbsupp:

Never been able to understand the fixation of finding out about the family tree by tracing the male linage. How many kids ended up as grievance kids because some one else had it in for the husband. I should know as I am one of those kids. Even tracing back through the female linage is not exact science either. Some wives took on an extra tin lid that was born out of wedlock or some other means over the years. My family tree only stretches back as far as mum and probably her grandparents. Not knocking those whom it interests but as they say records are only made to be broken. Why is it always someone in the tree centuries ago who was of noble stock and never the local village idiot.

:lmao: :lmao: skeletons in the cupboards Les, or trying to find those family secrets that most families seem to have, and everybody has them.
I got into it by pure accident, just before the old man died he gave me a school book that had been handed down, also a scrape of paper that he had written down his family as he remembered it. So as an act of remembrance i decided to fill in the blanks that he didnt know about and i was hooked. Its just like a giant puzzle with no real directions to go by, well that was 25 odd years ago and now im still trying to find some missing links John Anderson is one of them, apart from him saying he was a british subject born in Portugal, about 1800.Who was he and what was he doing in Portugal or rather what was his parents doing in Portugal.??????????????????????
Yes you are right a load of people claim linage to royalty etc ive even seen one claiming to be a direct descendant of the Pharaohs. ALL CRAP. Mine all seem to be pheasants with the odd trades person thrown in.
The reason for following the male linage is that the name stays the same where as the female line takes on the male surname, easy peasy.Except for the spelling and the odd minister being to inebriated to write without smudges and ink blots. :drunk: :lmao:

Thanks Sir Reg ive never seen that before, only transcripts. Certainly looks like a 'G' more than a 'C' and the witnesses look like Ann Discombe and Elizabeth ??bb could be Webb .
I wonder if Ron would be able to enlarge the signature for us?? (middle entry 7th line down folimised by) G or C Anderson and Martha Discombe And let us know what he thinks.
Anybody else with any ideas.????
Thanks again Sir Reg :thumbsupp: :thumbsupp: :thumbsupp: :thumbsupp: :thumbsupp: :thumbsupp: :thumbsupp:

Now Sir Reg you really do have me confused, still think it looks like a "G" more than a"C".
Now what if i throw a spanner into the works! What if that letter was a"H" instead ???. As ive traced the letter out using one flowing stroke like you would when writing your signature.
My reasons for thinking so are that John had two children,
Henry Roach,
Sarah Discombe.
as they seem to use family names as christian names, Roach is a surname as is Discombe, Sarah is Matha's mothers name so why cant Henry be Johns fathers name. seems to make sense.
Plus we have a HENRY running as a name as so a GEORGE. But no name beginning with a "C" ;eyes1
