Hi, this is my first post. I live in New Zealand and I've been researching my family history. I have discovered a lot about my great-grandfather, Maurice Louis Cowan, who was in the merchant navy around 1908 until WWI. I'm having great difficulty finding out about this period in his life. Wonder if anyone knows of a database or list of merchant navy seamen in Leith, Edinburgh or where I could go looking, many thanks.

He was born in 1882. When he got married to a Marion Robertson in 1911 he lived at 83 Kirkgate, Leith. I have a photo of him in Salonika 1915. I am specifically trying to track his movements from about 1906 to 1914. Many thanks.

Computers, eh! Who needs 'em? He's nowhere on the 1911 census, so it's a mystery. Appreciate any help you can provide, many thanks.

Hi I have found nothing in the local newspapers yet for that period. You seem to be correct about the 1911 Census, but he could be hiding in there somewhere??. I am now looking through all the ships crew's between 1906 and 1914.
Reg.
